Stellenbosch’s quaint county lanes are bursting with a plethora of coffee shops, boutiques and mouth- watering restaurants. Due to Fynbos Guest Houses’ central location, many of the eateries are within a short walking distance to our guest house. While our breakfast is delicious and worth getting excited about, there are a few more places close- by which we suggest trying out. All are within walking distance of the guest house:

This upscale pub and café is very popular throughout Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Based on the flavour and offerings of an authentic London pub, the Slug and Lettuce offers a traditional pub experience and one can expect deliciously cooked “pub grub” such as pizzas, burgers, wraps, tapas and freshly baked baguettes. For those looking to quench their thirst, there is a superb selection of local and international beers on tap and a vast array of cocktails and shooters to choose from. There is also an extensive list of Irish and Scottish whiskeys, premium brandies, cognacs and an award winning wine list.

5 Ryneveld5 Ryneveld

5 Ryneveld presents a sophisticated atmosphere shaped by the families, friends, lovers and businesspeople who meet there. It started out its life as a small Victorian house situated at 5 Ryneveld Street in the heart of Stellenbosch. Once owned by a Dutch family and successfully run for 17 years under the name ‘’De Zoete Inval”, it then became 5 Ryneveld which we find today.

The restaurant comprises of 5 rooms; the dining room, study, radio lounge and bedroom. The food is affordable, delicious and served gourmet style. One can enjoy dining on the street- side veranda during the warmer summer months and during winter; one can enjoy a fire lit inside- courtyard. The cuisine focuses on ones five basic tastes namely sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami. The menu largely comprises of wraps, burgers, steaks and salads along with a couple of speciality dishes. Getting to 5 Ryneveld from Fynbos Villa Guest House will be a mere 6 minute walk.

The Birdcage Gift Shop and Tea BarThe Birdcage

If you’re in the mood for tea and cake, this little shop is a real treat. The French inspired shop is home to number of delicacies including a selection of cupcakes, cakes and wedding cakes! The shop and the bar were started by three women whose dream was to open their own café. They provide employment to more than 11 previously unemployed people.

If the delicious cupcakes and cakes aren’t your thing, they also serve delicious breakfasts and light lunches either in the quaint courtyard or the cosy tea room. Other services offered include gift- wrapping, wedding registries and hosting for functions.

This delightful little shop and tea bar is located a mere 3 minute stroll from Fynbos Villa Guest House.

Jan Cats RestaurantJan Cats restaurant

The Jan Cats restaurant forms part of the Stellenbosch Hotel. The restaurant has become somewhat of an institution since its inception in 1988 and is one of the most popular eateries in Stellenbosch. Diners have the choice of dining indoors or al fresco on the sidewalk terrace. Jan Cats are known for their variety of flatbreads found nowhere else in Stellenbosch and sports fans can look forward to the Brasserie where one can enjoy their favourite live sports. The menu is fresh, simple and delicious and everyone will find something to tickle their taste buds.

The original owner of the property was Jan Cats himself and also the town’s medical doctor/ dentist/ barber. The original building was destroyed by a fire in the late 18th century before reopening its doors in 1876. The building was then restored to its former glory in 1987 and declared a national monument. Walking distance from Fynbos Guest House is 8 minutes.

Basic BistroBasic Bistro

With popular dishes such as gourmet burgers, flavoursome lamb curries, bountiful pasta dishes, matured steak and espresso based coffees of an international standard; it is easy to see why the Basic Bistro is so popular! The wine menu ranges from ‘Easy Drinking’ to ‘Connoisseur Wines’. The atmosphere is cosy and intimate, making guests feel right at home. Whether you want a romantic evening or a night out with your buddies, the Basic Bistro will have a dish and a setting to suit your needs.

One really is spoilt for choice in the land of oaks and there is a taste and setting to please just about everyone. There is no need to catch a taxi or jump in your rental car to find some of the best dining spots in Stellenbosch. Many are just a few short steps away and one can literally smell the fresh aromas from the doorstep of Fynbos Villa Guest House.
