April is a time of year for family as South Africans enjoy the Easter festive season. This means that many people use the influx of public holidays over this month to enjoy short breaks as well as the various events and activities on offer. Let’s explore what can be enjoyed around Stellenbosch:

The Western Cape’s Biggest Easter Egg HuntThe Western Cape s Biggest Easter Egg Hunt

On Sunday April 20th Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch will be hosting the biggest Easter egg hunt of the year. This is the perfect day out for the little ones as they follow a trail of yarn along the farms river edge to find the hidden eggs. Once they have searched high and low and they are still on their sugar rush from all the chocolate, there will be a giant chicken jumping castle, face and egg- painting and a giant egg piñata!

Parents will have the opportunity to enjoy their own Easter experience while at the farm with a delicious wine and chocolate tasting. Lunch featuring some Easter favourites will then be served to the whole family on the Spier Hotel lawns.

Price: R325 per person for lunch (not including the hunt). Kids (6-12) R162.50, kids under 5 eat for free. R100pp for the egg hunt starting at 10am.


Delvera Hi-Tec Easter Full Moon HikeDelvera Hi Tec Easter Fullmoon Hike

If you have ever been on one of these full- moon hikes you will know that it is a truly spectacular experience. Your arrival at the top will reveal a myriad of beautiful scenic winelands. Pack a small back pack with water and snacks and make your way to Dirtopia Trail Centre on Delvera Farm by no later than 17h20 to begin the hike, but it is best to arrive by 16h00. Please note that bookings are essential as these hikes are very popular.

The hike follows a 9.7km circular route on a marked trail and is perfect for the entire family. You will need to bring something warm to wear as well as torch and hiking shoes. If you do not want to bring your own food, picnics from the Simonsberg Café can be ordered through the trail centre.

Where: Dirtopia Trail Centre, Delvera Farm, R44 between Klapmuts and Stellenbosch.

SA Cheese FestivalSouth African Cheese Agri Expo Festival

What else beats a day in the county? Perhaps a day in the country with cheese? The SA Cheese Festival will take place at Sandringham Estate on 27- 29 April 2014. For cheese lovers, the day promises a culinary delight as a wide selection of products will be brought together. Never will you find such a wide selection of cheeses in one place! You can look forward to the following features at this gathering:

A Dairy Square: Home to the Checkers Cheese Emporium as well as a huge selection of handmade cheeses from various boutique cheese- makers from all over the country.

Carnival Park: A place to relax and perhaps indulge in all the bit and pieces you have bought at the festival. The “Gourmet Lane” will provide those with a superb choice for lunch or an early dinner. The festival is very child – friendly this year and features a host of activities and events to keep the little- ones busy.

Meander: The Afrox Cooking Pot is the ultimate in food theatre. Take a break from browsing and shopping and be entertained. There will be 6 different daily sessions featuring:

  • How to brew your own coffee at home
  • Masterchef sisters Seline and Leandri van der Walt will be cooking up a storm with a surprise basket of ingredients
  • Join the Great Grain and Grape debate and how cheese fits into the picture. Beer guru Lucy Corne and wine – lover Cathy Marston will shed some light on the subject
  • Well- known blogger Nina Timm will take you on a cheese adventure with Fairview cheese!
  • Other highlights in include klippies with something sweet, Drostdy Hof wine as the perfect potjiekos partners as well as a 4×4 experience with SAB brew master Dennis da Silva and SA’s Mr Cheese, Kobus Mulder
